Daymnnnn. KATE DRENNAN you are a goddess behind the camera. Having this shoot land in my hands actually left me speechless. The couple. The attire. The backdrop. And the actual images themselves…..
I love when I have amazingly creative talented souls enter my life, bringing forth their passion… and to share the ever so talented Kate Drennan and her photography with you all, makes my heart skip a beat….
Im just going to let you all gush over this BEAUTIFUL shoot, and you can find the full story and journey behind the shoot and all credits below.
When you arrive in the Lake Wanaka region you let out the breath you feel like you’ve been holding for years. The peaceful beauty of the place washes over you and quite suddenly you don’t ever want to leave! In this gorgeous region of mountains and lakes, it’s all about the freedom to do what you want, to be carefree, to stop and take it all in – quite literally to just breathe. It’s no wonder it’s been voted one of the top ten most romantic places on earth.
Wanaka is a picturesque hub on the shores of stunning Lake Wanaka. The town energy is lively, yet laid back. Everyone has a smile on their face and strangers grin and say hello. But despite being a small town, and a pretty one at that, Wanaka has an intrinsically global identity. People are drawn from all over the world to make this beautiful place their home. They love it, they are passionate about it and this is what makes it so very special. Even though only a few wedding vendors came up when searching online, every one of them is passionate, extremely talented and highly professional as well as exuding that awesome ‘Wanaka’ friendliness.
We ended up with an incredible team for this after wedding shoot of like-minded people all working together to create something magical. Carla from Lake Wanaka Tourism set the course for a collaboration of creatives which came together in just two days!. Flowers by Tracey at Crimson Wedding Flowers, hair design by Shannon Van Praag, makeup by Janine Joseph, creative styling by Hannah Wells (Faith Lord) wearing her own weddings dress and photography by Kate Drennan – what a dream team! Add to that the epic skills of Aspiring Helicopters pilot, Tim, and this was a recipe for perfect. And having handsome groom, Jossi Wells, New Zealand’s premier freestyle skier who took time off from the Winter Games to pose with his beautiful wife, Hannah, made the team complete!
Hannah and Jossi’s love story is a tale for another time, however, Jossi hailing from Wanaka and Hannah being a mid-west American girl, meant they only had wedding pictures from their wedding in the States. This was a perfect opportunity for them to have wedding shots taken in Jossi’s hometown – a place they both love. Her stunning Eddying dress was the ideal foil for a ‘treasure the dress’ shoot. They also got to play around and take some truly romantic, joyful and colourful shots which turned out – well, you can see how they turned out!
It’s not often a photo shoot turns into an epic adventure, but when you throw in river crossings not suitable for small hire cars, thousands of merino sheep in the road, stubborn cows, a road slip and oncoming tourist nearly causing Jossi’s Range Rover to tumble into the river, more sheep, more cows ignorantly blocking an adorable abandoned church we wanted to shoot at, the waterfall we raced the sun to get to being dry, finally making it to the helicopter and swooping up to one of the most photographed, most unbelievably breathtaking mountains in New Zealand (if not the world) with a simple magical view of Wanaka, and being blessed by an amazing sunset – well, you can see adventure almost seems too tame!
What stands out from this truly remarkable experience was the love Jossi and Hannah feel for each other, their energy and effervescence, and their openness to share their love and affection for each other. This photo shoot became about so much more than a Wanaka Wedding – it became a tribute to a beautiful couple, a beautiful landscape, and a beautiful destination – one any bride would fall in love with as we most certainly did.
